The Gringo Zoo
category: Jims Guatemala

We continue to be quite an attraction, scaring kids and eliciting stares wherever we go. We are just too tall and white to escape notice. The neighborhood kids like to come and watch us. They don’t talk much, since they haven’t been in school long enough to learn Spanish, to they just peer through the door. They used to just come barging in, and we had to lay down the law that kids can’t enter until invited (the adults are far more polite, and will NEVER enter unless you actually speak the magic words, “pase adelante por favor“).

gringo_zoo.JPGSo, yesterday, I was installing some metal screen around our food storage shelves, to keep the tx’ow (or, if you prefer, “rat”) out of our vittles. I turned around to see this, peering back through our door. This happens all the time. That is why we sometime call our house the Gringo Zoo… the kids just come by most days, to see what kind of crazy stuff the animals are up to this time.

Ok, gotta go- another villager just came by to meet us, and she brought us a gift of eggs from her hens.
